ALUMINIUM & THE ENVIRONMENT

The Human physical body is composed of “Saptadhatus”.“Saptadhatus” is a Sanskrit word, which means seven constituent elements (Sapta=seven, dhatus=elements).As the human body, the physical world also composed up of some Elements(dhatu) and Minerals ,which gives rise to many lives from a unicellular to multicellular organism . We named it as ‘Earth’. The whole animal and plant kingdom is being nurtured by it .Hence we call it as “Mother Earth”. With the sand dunes of time the human civilization has been regarded by the use of metals, from the stone age to bronze age, iron age, gold age and now we call this age as the age of Aluminium.
On the year 1808, Sir Humpry Davy identified the existence of metal base of alum, which he first termed as alumium and later as aluminum.
Since then, Aluminium has been remained as a key metal for many scientist and chemists  to produce it in a cost effective way for day to day use. Later on the year 1887 a Austrian chemist Carl Josef Bayer invented the cost effective way to produce Aluminium from Bauxite. The process began to gain importance in metallurgy together with the invention of the electrolytic Aluminium process invented in 1886. Together with the cyanidation process invented in 1887, the Bayer process marks the birth of the modern field of hydrometallurgy.
Today, the process is virtually unchanged, succeeding by Hall-Herault process for smelting and it produces nearly all the world's alumina supply as an intermediate in aluminium production.

Bauxite is the ore of Aluminium. For a tribe aluminium is his blood and some soil. For a Metallurgist it is some bauxite and current, for a businessman a handful of dollar and a luxury car, for the consumer society it a wrapper of a tobacco and insulator of a medicine. For the students who are studying in D.P.E.P schools it is the utensils of a common man, for the imperialistic nations like USA and Britain it is supersonic fighter planes and deadly weapons.
The environmental impacts of aluminium production.
To produce Aluminium products from Bauxite, the following 4 processes are necessary
 Mining – To extract raw Bauxite from the earth
 Refining – To refine raw Bauxite into Alumina powder
 Smelting – To convert Alumina into liquid Aluminium
 Casting – To produce Ingots, Wire-rods and Billets from liquid Aluminium

To produce one ton aluminium around 5 to 6 ton bauxite(grade) , 8 to 10 ton water , 1.5 ton coal , 0.6 ton anode carbon, 0.25 ton fuel, 0.2 ton caustc soda, 0.1 ton fluride salt, o.r ton calcin and petroleum, 0.15 ton of coke or pitch and 15000-16000 KW current.
Every one ton aluminium discharges 18 ton of poisonous wastes. From each ton of aluminium 6 ton red mud(a mixture  of sodium aluminate and undissolved bauxite residues containing iron, silicon, and titanium,14 rare earth elements,& some radioactive elements like HF,U,Th etc.),which contains  50 k.g of deadly poison called as Spent Pot lining(SPL) and many other cancer causing harmful agents like cyanides, heavy meatals etc.
Mining Bauxite causes many environmental hazards then any other mineral explorations, though  Aluminium is mainly produced from bauxite and over 90% of the world’s bauxite resources are concentrated on the tropical and sub-tropical belt in Australia, Guinea, Jamaica, Surinam, Brazil, and India(Odisha shares the highest 55% Bauxite reserve). It totally stops the perennial water streams and reduces the ground water level causing the area totally infertile and barren. The bauxite dusts which produce during mining excavations and conveying can travel up to 15 to 20 km on air and can contaminate the air and water so critically that  to cause a desert like surrounding.The aluminium refinery needs minimum 4 to 5 ton of water for refining.If the refinery runs a thermal power plant then it produces tons of  fly ash which ll be later collected on a ash pond and it emits a tons of carbon dioxide to the environment.Smelting plant emits many HFCs(Hydro floro carbons) like CF4, Hexafluoroethane which are the main substance for Ozone layer depletion and global worming.

Keeping on view of the above facts, mining Bauxite is no less hazardous than any nuclear disasters. While we are only busy on focusing on the nuclear disasters ignoring this mining activity, which might create another human made catastrophe and can turn this blue planet like  Mars.

The Story of a Sacred Mountain & Struggle for Exhistance


It is the story of a sacred and mighty mountain, standing as high as 1516 mtr of altitude in the Eastern Ghats to defeat the enormous worries and leaving apart the problems created by the humans in its loving self. It is a mountain which has been nurturing the millions of floras, faunas and many perennial water streams since the ages. The nature playing on its cradle  by listening to the symphony of rustling winds, gargling water streams and the tranquil melodies of singing birds. The mother mountain has its own name i.e Niyam-giri or Niyam Dongar(The Mountain of Law) by the scheduled mountain dwellers, the ‘Dongria Kondhs’(Mountain Tribes).Dongria kondh is one of the primitive and indigenous tribes of the world who enjoys a critical ,spiritual, and symbolic relation  with the Niyamgiri forests from the time immemorial. The Dongrias believe that the hill belongs to ‘Niyam Raja Penu’, a male deity represented by a Sword and worshiped during Dussera.They claim themselves to be the descendants of Niyam Raja. The Dongrias have a distinguished heritage because of their dress style, mode of living, indigenous skills, cultural pattern and social system interlinked with the nature and the mountain forests.

More than 75% of the Niyamgiri hills’ landmass is covered with dense forests. According to taxonomists, who visited ‘Niyamgiri Hills’ report in their preliminary assessment, "The flora of the hill range exhibits a very rich and varied assemblage of plant species owing to its diversified topography with high mountain peaks and innumerable deep valleys and gorges,abundant springs and diverse vegetation resources.”

On fauna front of view, the REIA report mentions that being mainly a forest area, the study area shows wide faunal diversity and abundance. The area exhibits a well-balanced ecosystem with a poised prey-predator relationship. The secondary data identifies a variety of faunal species under categories like endangered and vulnerable as per the Zoological Survey of India’s Red Data Book.

Keeping on view of the above facts the Govt was supposed to declare this area a wild life sanctuary.
Apart from that, the mountain is the finest deposits of Bauxites (A raw material of aluminium, used especially for warheads and weapons) in its womb, which lured the British giant Vedanta Aluminium Ltd to its home to mine bauxite and set up a massive refinery near its territory.

And this is how the Mountain came into the picture of the world media and struggle by its protectors(the Konds) .It is a struggle of a poor man, a poor clan, it is the struggle for their food, a struggle for their life , a struggle for their identity, a struggle for their God(the Mother nature the 'Dharani Penu' ). Moreover it is the struggle of a human who loves his mother greater than the god himself.


The Fact Finding Team of the Central Empowered Committee, Supreme Court, consisting of Mr. Sanjeev Chadha and Mr.S.C.Sharma , who visited the site, mentioned above things in their report, which submitted to Central Empowered Committee.

Crusaders against Corruption??

Anna Hazare, Arbind Kejriwal, Kiran Bedi, Prasant Bhusan…these name are being chanted by millions of Indians every day and the Indian print and electronic media is in a 24X7 days full coverage over their campaign against corruption. Now the matter is that, this 74 year old Gandhian activist is in his own way to fight against corruption with a non Gandhian principle i.e. Fast unto death, which is totally undemocratic and unconstitutional. To gain support from the public the Anna team has raised a strong issue of corruption which has its deep root in the Indian political system. Now team Anna is demanding for a strong ombudsmen like Lok pal who will sit on top of all the democratic institutions viz. Judiciary, Parliament, and Bureaucracy from a Peon to PM to sort out all the issues related to corruption.
If we will roll back to some few days this Anna phenomenon gained a huge momentum with a most irresponsible step taken by Delhi police by detaining Anna and his team from their residences. And above all, the home ministers’ statement was so embarrassing to tackle that situation. The whole issue was administered by the ruling party in a totalitarian manner which galvanized the middle class Indians to rush on to the streets, and Anna Got a huge support from the public. The so long anger of people over the rampant corruption and spat of big ticket scams by the ruling party has hailed suddenly on the streets of Delhi and all over the country.
The parliament of India is the supreme legislative body in the country and the Indian parliament possess legislative supremacy and thereby all the ultimate power over all political bodies over India. The law making procedure are done in the parliament. For this the parliamentary committee plays a vital role in the parliamentary system, they have a vibrant link between the parliament , the executive committee and the general public. Before an item of legislation becomes law it may be known as a bill. All the legislative proposals are brought before either house of the parliament in the form of a bill. Then the draft which will pass by both houses of parliament and assented by the president of India, and becomes an act of parliament. This is how a law will come in to existence in a parliamentary democracy.
But unfortunately the team Anna(Big Brother) demanding to bring such a bill by ignoring the interests of either house and the parliamentary standing committee, which is an undemocratic way of protest and which points to Anarchy.
Now take the Anna bill as granted but after enactment of that bill, will the entire problem related to corruption be solved? Is it justifiable to hand over the authority to a person who will have the total and absolute power over the judiciary, bureaucracy and political system and which is an unelected super god over all the democratic institutions ? From the present situation it is quite clear that the Govt. and the politicians have certainly lost the link between the people and their party members, which is a threat to the country’s democratic tranquility.
No doubt Anna and his team would be noble men and fighting for a noble cause but the way they have chosen that is totally against the principles of a democratic and constitutional sovereignty. Now let us see how far this Team Anna’s demand will be fulfilled in the course of time and only then it could be justify whether these activists are really crusaders against corruption or not.

Mining in Development

Although the mining industry can’t directly contribute in development but the revenue generated from mining can be utilized for the sustainable and overall development of an economy because mining helps in generating more revenue than any other industry do.

A part of the longstanding debate about the role of business in development focuses on the controversy regarding the efficacy of the mining industry in contributing to economic growth and sustainable development. Based on the success of mineral-rich industrialized countries like Canada, Australia, and the United States, mining development has long been promoted by mainstream economists as a way for developing countries to achieve sustained economic growth. Although mining did play a role in the economic development of Canada, Australia, and the United States, there were a number of other factors or “unique conditions” that favored economic growth in these countries (i.e. high levels of institutional capital, large internal national markets, scarce labour, and protected national markets.). Secondly, Power argues that the dynamics of the world economy are not the same now as they were during these industrialized countries’ development. Decreased transportation costs and the emergence of large mineral companies have resulted in the “disintegration” of the mineral industry and the local manufacturing industry.

Minerals can now be shipped cost-effectively to developed countries for processing and finishing, thereby reducing opportunities for knowledge and technology transfer and investment in host countries’ economies. Moreover, because many of the large mines in developing countries are now owned and operated by foreign multinationals, much of the wealth derived from mineral extraction is often repatriated rather than invested locally. Thus, a number of studies have found that instead of experiencing sustained economic growth, contemporary developing countries those points out, modern mining is a capital and energy intensive industry that uses very little labor. Thus, the industry will have a more significant impact on the creation of income streams in labor scarce countries than in labor abundant countries because it will provide a greater percentage of the population with employment and income. Largely dependent on mining have generally experienced worse economic performance (in terms of economic growth and poverty reduction) than resource-poor countries.

At a more local level, within a state like Odisha, mining within a tribal landscape tend to be worse off than indigenous community that rely on other forms of economic activity for survival. In fact, it is widely acknowledged that local tribal community who are totally dependent on agro forestry and NTFPs, tend to suffer the greatest social, cultural, and environmental costs of mining, while the central government and other parts of the country(urban areas) reap the economic rewards. However, that most contemporary developing countries lack well-developed social, political, and economic institutions, and given that mining has thus failed to contribute to their development at the macro-economic level, one must ask whether it is indeed possible for mining to contribute to sustainable development at a more local level.


The output is now the private Mining sector’s response to the most recent wave of public pressure on mining corporations to address the negative social and environmental impacts of their operations. Throughout the last decade, a number of high profile corporations such as TATA Steel, Vedanta Aluminium Ltd, Arcelor Steel, POSCO, Utkal Aluminium were attacked by non-government organizations (NGOs) and activist organizations for their poor human rights, labour, and environmental records. In response, a number of companies have embraced the concept of ‘corporate social responsibility’ (CSR), leading them to introduce a variety of policies, practices, and codes of conduct aimed at reducing the negative impacts of their operations and improving their contribution to society by going beyond what has been traditionally expected of business.

The Land of magnificent temples and architectures is now regarded as the land of mines and minerals. Orissa occupies a significant position in India’s mineral map, in terms of its resources and production.

Odisha’s mineral deposit is not only vast but also equally diverse bearing 16.9% of the country’s total mineral reserve. Odisha has been the leading producer of the minerals since three decades.

The Ministry of Mines 2009-10 report says that Odisha shares the highest percentage of mineral reserve with it ,viz. Chromite(95%), Nickel Ore (92%), Cobalt Ore(69%), Bauxite (55%), Titaniferous magnetite (51%),lime stone( 40%), Iron ore (33%). It also has the precious metals like ruby and platinum in its womb.

In the FY 09 Odisha ranked no.1 in terms of mineral production in India. Odisha shares the highest production among India’s mineral producing states viz. Iron ore (34.4%), Bauxite Ore (30.4%), Chromite (99.2%), Manganese Ore (32.0%), Coal (19.9%), and Graphite (45.0%).
The mineral wealth of a country is pivotal to that countries Industrial development while mining contributes to huge wealth creation through foreign exchange and employment generation. Most of the countries of the world have prospered by utilizing their mineral resources in a proper way.

Odisha has the abundant mineral reserve in its crust and has all the potential to build a robust mining industry to generate more foreign exchange and employment.

Due to its liberalization and globalization of business policy many multinational mining firms throng to invest in Odisha, but unfortunately when it came to Resettlement and Rehabilitation of the local communities and environment both the govt. and the firm failed to resolve the matter, which shows a poor and inexperienced strategy for a healthy and positive industrialization in the state.contd.....

'Odisha', known for its rich history, cultural heritage, architecture, natural beauty and for it's indigenous primitive tribes, which was attracting the foreign biologist, archeologist, anthropologist, historians and philosophers from the times immemorial.

But now it’s not that the culture, heritage and natural beauty that luring the multinational mining companies but it’s that the high quality of mineral deposits in its warmth womb.

The state regarded as the mineral basket of eastern India and home to several key minerals and ores such as Bauxite, Iron, Coal, Chromite, nickel etc, representing 16.9% of the countries total mineral resource.

Since 2008, Odisha has been the leading state in India terms of FDI in the mining sector of about INR 2.5 trillion.

From last few years a slew of big ticket investment in the mining sector raised to some one billion US dollars in the state,which shows the potential to grow its economy to a higher level but unfortunately all the multinational investors like Vedanta Aluminium Ltd. and POSCO are now struggling with the delay of their projects.

In its attempt to improve the state’s business climate the GoO(Govt. of Odisha) has issued a no. of policies like Industrial policy 2007, FDI policy 2006, Labor policy 2007, R & R policy 2006,ICT plan 2000-2005 and to encourage the private participation it introduced PPP policy 2007.And it has the mining regulatory bodies like OMC and Department of Steel and Mines.

Despite having tremendous growth potential the mining industry in Odisha continuous to face no of challenges due to the lack of poor infrastructure, mining policy and the mining regulatory bodies and some what the wasted interest of the politicians and bureaucrats.

The countries like Australia, South Africa, and Canada prospered through the proper utilization of their mineral resources to build a robust mining industry which propelled their economy to a greater high.

So it is the high time that the GoO must realize to boost its economy by proper utilization of its mineral resources by reviewing its mining policy and faster decision making in order to bring transparency and to build a robust mining industry , by encouraging the highest standards of technical, environmental, safety and social practices for the sustainable development of the society.

  4. to contain the most important and significant natural habitats for in-situ conservation of biological diversity, including those containing threatened species of outstanding universal value from the point of view of science or conservation.
